Blog – Winter in Chania

chania-winter

La Maison has been blessed with many winter visitors this year and we have been busy discovering,  with them, what Western Crete has to offer out of the usual holiday season.  While some of Chania closes down, much of the best remains open.

Walking around the Old Town’s picturesque Venetian streets is a gentler joy with fewer visitors and lower, but comfortable, temperatures.
While the famous Samaria Gorge is closed during winter Western Crete has other gorges, some more bite-sized and user friendly, such as Imbros or Aradena.
The nearby Akrotiri Peninsula has beautiful and historical monasteries (Aghia Triada, Gouverneto) as well as seaside restaurants and spectacular cakes with a view over Chania at Koukouvaya…
And while we are on food….  a picturesque drive into the mountains, perhaps to Drakonas or Zourva villages will reward you with traditional food cooked by local families.
